Founder Stories: Clare Cooper of Made by Coopers on Self-Belief and Having the Right Team

Welcome back to our Founder Stories series, where we sit with inspiring and influential women to dive into their entrepreneurial journey and discuss all things business (and wellness). Today, we speak with Clare Cooper, the co-founder of aromatherapy and wellness brand Made By Coopers.

Clare lives in Sussex by the beach with her partner and their two children. Previous to starting her business, she worked freelance as a hair and makeup artist in London.

FLAURA: You’ve created a beautiful brand of wellbeing products. What inspired you to start Made By Coopers?

Clare: My partner Darren and I were actually on a three month trip around India to deepen our yoga and meditation practice, which was all part of a healing journey, recovering from the anxiety disorder I had in my twenties. During our trip we stayed in an Ayurvedic centre in Kerala and were inspired by the holistic treatments we received and the naturally grown products that were used. After our trip, we had the idea to start our own brand of aromatherapy and wellness products that boost, balance and support emotional and mental wellbeing through the power of plants.

F: What has surprised you most about the entrepreneurial journey?

The belief in myself! The first couple of years having our business, I still had the mentality that I wasn’t quite good enough and lacked confidence, especially with no formal business background. Over the years I have learned so much and have confidence in myself and know that I don’t need to work on every single aspect of the business, but to have an amazing team around me with all different qualities.

F: How do you stay motivated?

Taking the time out for a creative day to get new ideas is a real motivator. I have always been a creative person and this is essential to not just plan new products but also to think of solutions to any problems we may be facing.

F: How do you define success?

The aim was always to create products that actually help people with problems like anxiety, low mood and poor sleep and knowing that we have truly helped people proves we have succeeded! On a personal level, success for me is to have an exciting business, a great team and a good balance of family life also.

F: What would you say are the three most important traits to being an entrepreneur?

Don’t always think your way is the only way – always ask others in your team’s opinions! Be prepared to change direction – things don’t have to be set in stone and can evolve or change direction at any time. Lastly, be organised! I am naturally unorganised, so having software like Asana, has helped organise our projects, daily tasks and helps to keeps me focused.

F: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Get a great team and find people to work with that have strengths different from your own. At first you will have to do it all, but don’t be afraid to learn! There is so much training online to help with things like building websites, marketing etc.

F: What advice would you give to other women looking to start their own business?

Try and attend seminars and join groups with like-minded women so you can be around people on the same path as you. Also don’t tell too many people you know your ideas – some, even family can knock your ideas and make you lose faith!

F: Do you have a favourite product?

I am particularly proud of our latest product Zen Room & Pillow Mist and also our Grapefruit Passion Cleansing Oil and Superfood Firming Serum! I use all three daily and even though it’s my own product, I still love the ritual of using these!

F: Are you working on any new/exciting projects you can tell us about?

I am working on a line of massage oils and also some hand products. Possibly more meditation products like a cushion to sit on while you meditate.
