Welcome back to our Founder Stories series, where we sit with inspiring and influential women to dive into their entrepreneurial journey and discuss all things business (and wellness). Today, we speak with Misha Barling, the founder of Bondi Coffee.
Misha Barling is a qualified medical radiographer, senior NHS mammographer and mother of one.
FLAURA: What inspired you to start Bondi Coffee?
Misha: Following the birth of my son five years ago I suffered with post-natal depression and lack of energy. I was consuming a lot of coffee – usually unhealthy lattes – to give me a lift and get me through the day. Being a coffee addict, I really wanted a coffee that would give me a nice big boost of energy and also be super healthy – and also taste delicious. I couldn’t find such a coffee so I decided to develop one of my own.
F: What makes Bondi Coffee different to other brands?
M: Bondi Coffee is like no other coffee on the market. It tastes just like (or even better than) regular barista-style instant coffee but adds superfoods, vitamins and other functional ingredients.
The Lean-Green Blend is your everyday coffee, designed to boost your energy, mood and metabolism. It really gets you firing on all cylinders on a daily basis.
The Workout Booster coffee contains 9 different performance enhancing ingredients such as MCTs, BCAA and beta-alanine to help you get peak performance, and also contains 2000% RDA of Vitamin B3, ….. B6 and ….. B12 to help speed your recovery and keep you in top shape in and out of the gym.
F: What has surprised you most about the entrepreneurial journey so far?
M: The most surprising thing has been other amazing entrepreneurs willing to give encouragement and advice along the way. The other surprising thing is that success is not linear – every entrepreneur has setbacks and bad luck – you just have to push through and make your own good luck as well.
F: How do you define success?
M: The satisfaction of learning all the time, challenging myself and seeing how many people’s lives Bondi Coffee has changed for the better.
Personal success is a happy family – having a beautiful son and a fun marriage.
F: How do you stay optimistic during setbacks?
M: I’m a huge believer in the law of attraction and I practice daily affirmations and positive visualisation techniques to keep me focussed on the positives and not the negatives.
Also, hearing about setbacks other entrepreneurs have been through and kept going inspires me to know that no matter what happens good luck and success are just on the horizon.
F: What’s the most rewarding part of your day now?
M: Spending time with my little boy, reading with him and just chatting to him
about his school days. He melts my heart!
F: What would you say are the three most important traits of being a successful
M: Persistence – Never, ever give up. Courage – It takes guts and courage to start a business. Decisiveness – you have to know when to change things up.
F: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
M: Definitely from my dad… ‘whats the worst that can happen?’
F: What advice would you give to other women looking to start their own business?
M: Don’t be afraid, but make sure you’re prepared to put in the hours and sacrifices to make it a success. Always try and balance your family life – time goes too quickly.
F: Are you working on any new/exciting projects you can tell us about?
M: We’re really focussed on expanding Bondi Coffee’s reach throughout the UK,
and also working on a couple of new blends which will be amazing.
