Founder Stories: Jessica Sepel of JSHealth on Problem Solving and Staying True To Your Purpose

Welcome back to our Founder Stories series, where we sit with inspiring and influential women to dive into their entrepreneurial journey and discuss all things business (and wellness). Today, we speak with Jessica Sepel, the founder of JSHealth and JSHealth Vitamins.

Jessica Sepel is an Australian clinical nutritionist, best-selling health author, and the founder of JSHealth and JSHealth Vitamins. She is passionate about empowering people around the world to ditch dieting and embrace balance in their health journey, and believes in nourishing the body naturally using ingredients backed by science. She has helped hundreds of thousands of women worldwide to heal their relationships with food and their bodies, and find confidence and happiness again, teaching that health should be a sustainable, enjoyable lifestyle.

FLAURA: What inspired you to start JSHealth?

Jessica: It all began when I started documenting my own struggles with fad dieting and my poor relationship with my body in a blog. When I started studying nutrition, I learned so much about how to actually care for your body, and I wanted to share my journey of healing my relationship with food and my body. I quickly developed an online community, and educated them on the importance of balance and kindness towards yourself. My blog became a source of hope and community for women struggling with similar issues.

From there, I went on to develop an 8-Week Program aimed at helping people heal their own relationships with their bodies, and the JSHealth App which has hundreds of nutritious recipes, workouts, meditations and more, aimed at providing my community with all the tools they needed to live a happy, healthy and balanced life.

Then, we launched JSHealth Vitamins, which built on my commitment to nourishing your body using natural ingredients backed by science.

F: What makes JSHealth different to other brands?

J: I am so committed to helping people feel confident in their own bodies, encouraging a balanced and sustainable approach to a healthy life, rather than encouraging fad diets like so many other brands do. I feel a genuine care for my community, and want to help them live a happier, healthier life.

F: What has surprised you most about the entrepreneurial journey so far?

J: That the journey truly is the best part. While it feels amazing when you hit your goals and KPIs, it cannot be compared to how good the everyday hustle feels. I used to think it was all about the end success for companies. Now, I recommend trying to enjoy the journey!

F: What’s the most rewarding part of your day now?

J: Hearing the messages and reviews from our community about our products every day. There is nothing more rewarding than hearing how we’re helping so many people feel more confident in their own skin.

F: How do you stay motivated?

J: My community keeps me motivated. The more I receive incredible feedback and results from them, the more I feel driven to continue producing products that will help and support them, and meet their needs. They are my motivation!

F: How do you keep your team motivated?

J: Good question! We hire people who have a genuine passion to also help others live a healthy life, and truly believe in the JS philosophy. This usually equates to everyday motivation to help our customers. I also try not to micro manage our staff, so they have freedom in their roles which can be very motivating and rewarding.

F: How do you stay optimistic during setbacks?

J: I now understand business is just problem solving and managing issues/challenges as they arise. When you understand challenges are just part of the journey, you expect them and learn not to panic when they present themselves. Now, I just flow with them. The challenges strengthen me personally, but also the business. We need them – and now I see them as a good thing.

F: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

J: My Mum once told me that “Hard work never goes unnoticed.” And my Dad taught me,“Be kind, it’s the only way.”

F: What advice would you give to other women looking to start their own business?

J: There is no such thing as overnight success. If you stay true to your purpose and mission, you WILL achieve your goals. You will build what you have dreamt of. But you have to keep the passion alive and at the front of your mind. And do not fall when the challenges arrive – they are there to help you grow!

F: What would you say are the three key traits of a successful entrepreneur?

J: Passion and purpose. Staying in your lane and remaining focussed on your mission. Do not look to your left or right too much.

F: Are you working on any new/exciting projects you can tell us about?

J: We are launching some very exciting new verticals of vitamin products that we can tell you all about in 2021!

Top 5 Wellness Habits

  1. I always focus on filling my body with whole foods.
  2. I practice mindful movement, listening to what my body craves, whether that be a gentle walk in nature or an intense HIIT session, and move my body accordingly for 20 mins per day.
  3. I prioritise 7-9 hours of sleep every night.
  4. I stick to one coffee per day, enjoyed before midday, to support my sleep and energy levels.
  5. I nourish my body with my nutritionally-formulated vitamins – in particular my Probiotic + for gut health, my Anxiety + Stress to keep me balanced and calm, and my PM+ to support a deep sleep and rested mind.
