6 Tips for Making your Scented Candle Last Longer

A trail of black smoke, a candle half-burned and a mushroom-shaped wick…the perils of a scented candle! If you’re a scented candle lover, it pays to know these simple tips to make your scented candle last longer, and smell stronger!

1. The first burn should be for at least 3 hours

You should always burn your candle for at least 3 hours when first lighting it. This is to make sure the top layer of wax is fully melted which will mean you get an even burn whenever you use your candle. It sounds strange but wax has a memory, so the first burn is crucial in how your candle will perform after that first burn. If you miss this step, your candle may ‘tunnel’ which means you end up with an excess amount of unmelted wax around the edge of your candle. Which brings us to the second tip…

2. Make sure your wax fully melts with every burn

Just like the first burn, allowing your wax to melt fully will mean your candle melts at a consistent rate with each burn, and will smell just as strong with every burn. However don’t allow for the wax to melt too much. A wax pool deeper than an inch can cause the candle to overheat and the candle container could crack.

3. Trim your wick!

Keeping your wick trimmed to around half a centimeter high will produce a safer, smaller flame with less soot. If a wick is too long, it will resemble a mushroom shape when burned and will burn through your candle a lot quicker, producing unsightly soot and smoke. Make sure to trim your HEROWN The Florist candle to maximum impact!

4. Keep your candle out of draughty areas

Not only is it safest to keep your candle out of draughts to avoid anything catching fire, but it will also slow down the burn rate of your candle so you can keep it burning for longer.

5. Re-center your wick after each burn

When you have extinguished your candle, and the wax is still liquid, make sure to re-centre your wick. Movement of the wick during burning is completely normal, but re-centring it will make sure you get the most even burn next time you light your candle.

6. Cover your candle when not in use

Covering your candle when you’re not using it will stop any dust from collecting on the top of the wax. If there is wax build up, you can wipe this away with a clean, humid cotton pad or cloth..

If you’re able to follow these steps then you’ll be able to maximise the lifespan of your favourite scented candle! Visit HEROWN here, and use the code FLAURA15 to get 15% off!
