We all know that we should aim to walk (at least) around 10,000 steps per day. Reaching this goal is easy when you go for a long walk with a friend or on a family hike. This, however, isn’t the option every day, especially now that we’re spending more time indoors and less time socialising. Luckily, there are easy ways in which you can increase your daily steps!
Whenever you can, walk while you’re doing something else. Talking on the phone, listening to an e-book, waiting for your nail polish to dry, even brushing your teeth. These are all activities that can be done while walking around your house or garden.
Breaks during work
Take regular breaks, but don’t spend them on social media. Instead, take a little walk, even if it’s only to the end of the hallway. If you’re using the Pomodoro technique, you’ll be taking a walk every 25 minutes!
Learn to walk to places whenever you can, be it the bank, the bakery or the office. If your workplace is very far away, try combining transport and walking. Park your car further away than necessary or get off the metro or bus a few stations too early.
Make unnecessary trips
In addition to always taking the stairs, you can also do simple tricks like walking to a bathroom or coffee machine that is further away, volunteering to deliver something on foot, taking the shopping to the house bit by bit, etc.
Start your day with a walk
Don’t let yourself run out of time for walking by making it the first thing you do in the morning. Wake up half an hour earlier and go for a short walk. Afterwards, you’ll feel refreshed, happier and more concentrated.
