Meditation isn’t for everyone. Sitting still is hard for some people, but luckily there’s an alternative that may produce the same results of mindfulness and calmness whilst also sparking joy and creativity. Enter: adult colouring books.
These ingenious little things bring the practice of art therapy right into your home, and have seen a surge in popularity in recent years. And I can see why. It’s a simple idea, but extremely effective – you just sit…and colour. That’s it. It might not seem like much, but it’s extremely effective in helping with anxiety.
The act of colouring takes out any pressure that has to do with artistic creation (as there’s no need for your final piece to be good) but it maintains the element of mindfulness. While colouring, you completely disconnect from anything around you and you’re able to be present in the moment, your only thoughts being “what colour should I pick for the butterfly’s wings.”
If you’ve ever seen a child laid on the floor colouring without a care in the world, their feet in the air and their crayons spread out around them, then you’ll know how effective these adult colouring books can be. They’re a great addition to your bookshelf and if there’s anything that I recommend you do this week, it’s to buy one and see how great it will make you feel.
